FOSTER CITY — Applied Biosystems Group on Tuesday said it agreed to acquire Ambion Inc.'s research-products division for about $273 million.
The agreement is expected to close early next year.
Closely held Ambion has projected 2005 revenue of more than $52 million, the companies said.
Applied Biosystems, a unit of Foster City-based Applera Corp., expects the deal to dilute earnings for fiscal 2006 and 2007 and possibly be breakeven or add to earnings in fiscal 2008.
Ambion, based in Austin, Texas, specializes in making products for handling, storing and measuring ribonucleic acid, or RNA. RNA is a molecule that delivers the genetic message of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) from the nucleus of a cell to the cytoplasm where proteins are made.
For the fiscal first quarter ended Sept. 30, Applied Biosystems had earnings of $57.5 million on revenue of $415.5 million.
In morning trading, shares of Applera edged up 28 cents, or 1.1 percent, to $26.76 on the New York Stock Exchange.
