Fundraiser attendee Jeffrey Bagtas (left) converses with a casino dealer at the San Mateo Sister City Association’s Casino Night Fundraiser at the Beresford Recreation Center on Aug. 25. Every other year since 1979 San Mateo and Toyonaka have rotated host duties, sending teams of 11- and 12-year-old all-stars for a cultural and athletic experience. This year, for the first time, San Mateo is sending a girls’ softball team, comprised of 17 girls who will compete against girls’ softball teams in Toyonaka.
