The San Mateo County Board of Education, along with county Superintendent Anne Campbell, declared Wednesday, Nov. 14, Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day, following a request from the students of Deborah Carlino’s fifth-grade class at Martin Elementary School in South San Francisco.
The event next month will honor Bridges’ bravery as a young student in 1960 to desegregate her elementary school in New Orleans, despite overwhelming community opposition.
County education officials decided to honor Bridge’s legacy following the Martin students collecting a petition with over 1,000 signatures advocating for the recognition. Ultimately, students are hopeful to spread the event across the state.
