Mary Karlin, a staff instructor and hospitality manager at Ramekins Culinary School in Sonoma and author of "Wood-Fired Cooking: Techniques and Recipes for the Grill, Backyard Oven, Fireplace and Campfire,” speaks about both her book and her professional experiences on Saturday, Oct. 3 at noon at Draeger’s Culinary School, 222 E. Paul Kalas

Professor Paul Kalas of the UC Berkeley Astronomy Department presents "Hubble Breakthrough: The First Photos of a Planet Orbiting Another Star,” an illustrated, non-technical lecture, Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Foothill College is located on El Monte Road in Los Altos Hills off Interstate 280. Visitors must purchase a campus parking permit for $2. Ronald Ballard

Ronald Ballard, raised in a family of early workers in the cause of Christian Science, entered the full-time practice of Christian Science upon graduation from college. Ballard traveled extensively, talking before groups worldwide, and represented Christian Science to the media. He is a contributor to the Christian Science periodicals and the radio editions of the Herald and Sentinel programs.
