Keith Urban didn't set out to record a yacht rock record. But then he entered the 'Flow State'
NEW YORK (AP) — Keith Urban didn't set out to record a yacht rock covers album. It just happened. “Flow State” features 10 covers and an original track with a giant of the genre, Michael McDonald. Urban says the project started spontaneously in his Nashville studio, where he recorded songs with session musicians. The album grew over months, capturing the joy of music without commercial pressures. Urban's unique take on classics includes collaborations with Little Big Town and John Mayer. The original song “We Go Back” was written in 2020 and finally recorded with McDonald. Urban describes the album as a soothing escape during divisive times.

Glenn Close is finally getting an Oscar. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Wednesday that she will receive an honorary Academy Award at the annual Governors Awards. Close, an eight-time nominee, is known for her emotional range and complex characters. The awards often honor artists with legendary careers but no competitive Oscar. Norman is celebrated for breaking barriers and inspiring generations of artists.

As FIFA entices a new generation of fans, a Brazil influencer's platform will stream all 104 games
GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP) — In Brazil, home of soccer-mad fans and the five-time world champions, the only way to watch all 104 games of the World Cup will be through the streaming platform anchored by a digital influencer. Elsewhere, YouTube and TikTok users will get to see parts of the matches live for the first time. Forget about the exclusivity of traditional over-the-air networks. That's giving way to digital platforms and streaming services. The World Cup will be watched differently this time. Younger audiences will get increased access to soccer’s showcase event as FIFA pushes to engage the next generation of fans.

This is the first negotiation under new DGA President Christopher Nolan. Similar four-year deals have been ratified recently by unions representing writers and actors. The collective bargaining agreement must still be approved by the guild’s national board and ratified by the guild membership.
Movie Review: This train’s going fast, but the jokes fly even faster in “Stop! That! Train!’
The runaway bullet train travels fast in “Stop! That! Train!” But the jokes and gags? They come even faster. There's a sweet madcap feel to the movie, a disaster-flick spoof directed by Adam Shankman and starring RuPaul and alums from the “Drag Race” universe. RuPaul is a hoot as President Judy Gagwell, but the heart of the movie, writes Associated Press critic Jocelyn Noveck in her review, is the duo of Tess and DeeDee (“Drag Race” alums Ginger Minj and Jujubee), train hostesses whose friendship is tested as they navigate a perilous ride through a catastrophic “Stormaganza.” Opens Friday in theaters.
Laurence Olivier is honored with a plaque at his London childhood home
LONDON (AP) — The late Laurence Olivier, arguably Britain's greatest stage actor, has been honored with a plaque at his childhood home in central London. Unveiled by Ian McKellen, the plaque marks where Olivier began acting as a child at the home. McKellen said Wednesday that Olivier's influence on the profession is unforgettable. Olivier lived at the home from ages 6 to 11, creating a makeshift stage there for his performances. He went on to widespread acclaim for his Shakespearean roles and won an Academy Award for playing Hamlet in 1949. He also helped establish London's National Theatre. Olivier died in 1989 at the age of 82.

Ads in New York must now label AI-generated 'synthetic performers'
New York has implemented a law requiring advertisements featuring AI-generated people to clearly label them as “synthetic performers.” The law, signed by Governor Kathy Hochul in December, took effect Tuesday. Her office describes it as a “first-in-the-nation law” aimed at enhancing transparency as AI performers become more common in media. Ads that fail to disclose synthetic performers will now face penalties. This move is part of broader efforts to address AI-related job security and privacy concerns. The law goes into effect despite larger pushback from the Trump administration, which has tried to block states from regulating AI.
