Madeleine Evans, a senior at Crystal Springs Upland, has come a long way in four years.
She was one of three athletes on the Gryphons track team her freshman year. Four years later, she was running in the State Meet in Sacramento, competing in the open 400 and the 4x400 relay, although she didn't live up to her expectations.
"I was happy to be there but I wasn't happy about the way I ran," Evans said. "I wanted a ."
While her performance in Sacramento was less than what Evans wanted, it could not take away from the fabulous season she had. At the Bay Area Conference championships, Evans set four league records - 26.11 in the 200, 57.94 in the 400, 50.18 in the 4x100 relay team and 4:08.40 in the 4x400 relay.
She lowered her time in the 400 over the next two weeks, running a 57.84 in the North Coast Section Class A final and a 57.81 at the NCS Meet of Champions, sending her to the State Meet.
Heady stuff considering she hadn't run the 400 since the middle of the season. Evans finished the 2004 season running in the mid-59s. She started out the 2005 season near the same time so she figured her times would keep going lower. After giving up soccer to concentrate on track, the focus paid off as she shaved nearly two seconds off her time.
Evans hopes to keep dropping time when she gets to the University of Pennsylvania, where she plans to continue her track career.
