The Ravens saved the dramatics for the top of the seventh inning Saturday in a 6-5 win at Monte Vista Christian-Watsonville. Trailing 5-2 in the final inning, Sequoia loaded the bases with a walk and two hit batsmen to set the stage for Winfield, who connected for a go-ahead grand slam to left. The senior previously hit a game-winning slam March 12 with a walk-off shot in extra innings to deliver an 11-7 win over Santa Teresa-San Jose.
Senior Mario Fausto also homered in the game with a two-run shot to center in the first. Sequoia’s initial lead didn’t last long, as Monte Vista rallied for three runs in the bottom of the frame, capped by a go-ahead single from sophomore Jake Moro. The Mustangs added two more in the fifth to end sophomore starting pitcher Oliver Connelly’s day.
Junior reliever Dom De La Cruz worked 1 2/3 innings to earn the win, but departed after allowing a two-out double to Mikie Melenudo in the bottom of the seventh. Winfield was summoned for his first pitching appearance since March 19, and locked up with junior Bryson Boles for an eight-pitch at-bat before getting a called strike three to save it.
Winfield is now slashing .419/.557/.907 on the year. The senior’s six home runs match his career high, a figure he has reached in three straight seasons. The St. Mary’s College commit now has 22 home runs through his four-year varsity career.
