There’s only one way for a home team to win an extra-inning game by four runs. It’s unlikely, however, anyone will match the way the Ravens did it in their 11-7 victory last Thursday over Santa Teresa-San Jose. Sequoia not only rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning to win it on Morgan Winfield’s walk-off grand slam, the senior’s game-winning bolt came one inning after senior Mario Fausto connected for a grand slam to tie it in the bottom of the seventh.
The Ravens (6-1) overcame two late deficits after trailing 6-2 heading to the bottom of the seventh. Fausto entered the day with just one varsity home run to his credit, but came through in the power department in the clutch, getting ahead in the count 2-0 before clubbing his first homer of the season with the bases loaded to tie it 6-all.
Santa Teresa, though, rallied to jump ahead 7-6 in the top of the eighth. But the Ravens loaded the bases, and pushed the tying run across on a fielder’s choice on an infield grounder with the throw going home and the run scoring ahead of the tag.
Then Winfield delivered his second homer of the year, walking it off for Sequoia in grand fashion.
Fausto earned the win in relief, allowing four runs on seven hits through five innings of work. Dorian Larson homered for Santa Teresa (3-2), while David Medina paced all batters with three hits and adding a pair of RBIs.
