King’s Academy 8, Woodside 1
Pitcher Katia Nesper, a Northwestern commit, was in midseason form, leading the Knights to a win over the Wildcats in the PAL Bay Division opener for both.
Nesper, a senior and the PAL Co-Pitcher of the Year last year, mowed down Woodside (0-1 PAL Bay, 6-2 overall), striking out 18, allowing one run on three hits, while walking five. Nesper has made five starts this season and is 4-1. In 35 1/3 innings pitched, she has struck out 90 batters — averaging 18 per game. There are 21 outs in a seven-inning softball game.
Woodside scratched out its run in the top of the fifth, with Angelina Aranda driving in Hannah Walker.
Aragon 9, Terra Nova 0
The Dons handed the Tigers their first loss of the season in a non-league game in Pacifica.
Aragon (6-6 overall) scored two in the first, one in second, one in the fourth and then blew the game open with a five-run seventh. Olivia Mukherjee went 3 for 4 for the Dons, coming up a home run shy of the cycle. She drove in four runs and scored twice.
Makayla Hafoka and Riley Wideman combined in the circle for the shutout, limiting Terra Nova (4-1) to just four hits.
Hillsdale 11, St. Ignatius 1
The Knights posted a mercy-rule win as the Wildcats continue their non-league tour of the PAL.
Of SI’s eight games, six have come against PAL opponents.
Madelyn Peña homered and drove in three runs to lead Hillsdale (3-4 overall) offensively. Mia DeMartini and Sophia Shelton each added two RBIs each for the Knights, as well. Lola Jones got the win, limiting SI (3-5) to just two hits in five innings.
Vicky Carillo Marchetti drove in the lone run for the Wildcats, an unearned run.
South City 16, Summit Shasta 4
The Warriors scored multiple runs in all four innings as they hung a mercy-rule defeat on the Black Bears.
South City (3-3) led 5-0 after two innings before scoring 11 over the final two. Kadence Yip went 3 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored for the Warriors. Liala Knichen had a bases-clearing single to drive in three, while Madyson Quintanilla went 3 for 4 with two triples and three RBIs.
Summit Shasta (1-1) scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth inning.
In other action ...
Olivia Rodgers drove in five runs to lead Menlo-Atherton (4-1 overall) to an 18-1 rout of American-Fremont (2-8).
Mountain View (3-6) scored a run in the top of the third and that was enough as the Spartans beat Carlmont (2-4-1), 1-0.
Mitty (8-1 overall) rolled to a 9-2 win over Capuchino (1-3).
Branham (5-3) topped Sequoia (1-3), 9-4.
Design Tech (2-1) scored 19 runs on 26 hits in a 19-2 win over El Camino (2-3).
Baseball
El Camino 5, Priory 4, 9 innings
The Panthers rallied with single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to send the game to extras and then scored a run in the top of the ninth.
But the Colts rallied for two in the bottom of the ninth to notch a wild win in the PAL Lake Division opener for both teams.
El Camino (1-0 PAL Lake, 5-2 overall) led 1-0 after the first and 3-1 after the fifth before Priory (0-1, 4-2) rallied. Gabe Meriales, Michael McCauley and Alejandro Topete each drove in a run for the Colts to make a winner of Adrian Iniguez, the last of three El Camino pitchers. He got the final two outs of the ninth.
Half Moon Bay 4, Sacred Heart Prep 3
A three-run fourth carried the Cougars to the win over the Gators in the PAL Ocean Division opener.
HMB (1-0 PAL Ocean, 4-3 overall) trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the fourth before taking control with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Cole Giannini and Jacob Couto each had an RBI for the Cougars. Kai Kung got the win, scattering six hits over six innings, allowing two earned runs with six strikeouts. Riley Jackson notched the save.
Nico Pollioni had a triple and two RBIs to lead the offense for SHP (0-1, 4-3).

Crystal 12, Jefferson 2
The Gryphons scored in all five innings as they posted a mercy-rule win in the PAL Lake Division opener for both, earning their first win of the season in the process.
Crystal (1-0 PAL Lake, 1-3-1 overall) scored three in both the first and second innings, scored a run in the third and then added five more over the final two innings. Tyler Hanebrink and Connor Uchida each drove in three runs for the Gryphons, with Hanebrink collecting a double and Uchida a triple. Christopher Campana got the win on the mound, working the first four innings, allowing a run on two hits.
In other action ...
South City (5-2 overall) got three RBIs from Gio Bernal in a 7-4 non-league win over Live Oak (3-4-1).
Capuchino (7-1 overall) got three RBIs each from Jordan Estrella and Will Ferreira as the Mustangs rolled over Design Tech (1-4-1), 17-7.
Boys’ tennis
Aragon 5, Carlmont 2
In a showdown for the PAL Bay Division lead, the Dons handed the Scots their first loss of the season.
Three of the matches went three sets, with Aragon (6-0 PAL Bay, 8-1 overall) winning two of them. Darrin O’Brien outlasted Dmitry Ovesnov, 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 and the Dons’ No. 3 doubles team of Linus Feng and Kian Chung got past Nathan Reznik and Maxmillian Margolis 4-6, 7-6, 10-5.
Carlmont (5-1, 6-1) won three of the four singles matches, including Aaron Zhiang downing Pacome Polly, 3-6, 6-0, 10-6.
Lucas Rowe, playing at No. 1 singles for the Scots, cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win.
Sequoia 4, Half Moon Bay 3
The Ravens stayed in a tie with Hillsdale for first place in the PAL Ocean Division as they held off the Cougars, dropping them a game behind.
The match was split between the teams. Sequoia (3-0 PAL Ocean) swept the four singles matches to clinch the victory, while HMB (3-1) took all three doubles matches.
The match was all but decided at No. 4 singles, where Sequoia’s Julien Czaja outlasted HMB’s Carlos Ortega in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 10-8.
The Cougars won a three-set match at No. 3 doubles, where Tractor Forster and Marshall Patton posted a 6-4, 2-6, 10-4 win over Sequoia’s Teo Wenzel and Ben Rosen.
In other action ...
Burlingame (4-2 PAL Bay) swept the three doubles matches to beat Woodside (1-5) 6-1.
Menlo-Atherton (2-4 PAL Bay) topped San Mateo (0-6), 5-2.
Hillsdale (3-0 PAL Ocean) kept pace with Sequoia atop the Ocean Division with a 7-0 sweep of El Camino (1-3).
Oceana (1-3 PAL Ocean) picked up its first win of the season, beating Capuchino (0-4) 6-1.
Badminton scores
In a showdown for first place in the Bay Division, Carlmont (4-0 PAL Bay) stayed undefeated while handing Burlingame (3-1) its first loss, 19-11.
Westmoor (2-1 PAL Bay) outlasted Aragon (2-2), 16-14.
San Mateo (2-2 PAL Bay) beat Mills (0-4), 19-11.
Menlo-Atherton (1-3 PAL Bay) picked up its first win of the season, beating South City (1-2), 17-13.
Hillsdale routed Jefferson, 27-3.
El Camino beat Capuchino, 18-12.
Boys’ golf
Capuchino 243, South City 261
The Mustangs and Warriors took on the front nine of a tough, tight Green Hills Country Club course, with the Mustangs coming away with the Ocean Division win.
Senior Ethan Corpus, and sophomore brother Caleb Corpus, led the way for Capuchino, as both finished with rounds of 45. Julin Hashimoto came in with a 50 for the Mustangs.
Joseph Preciado scored the low round of the day in leading South City, finishing with a 42. Ian Alferez came in with a 44 for the Warriors.
