Trent Amoroso did it all for the Wildcats, as they clinched the outright PAL Ocean Division title with the win over the Colts. Woodside leads second-place Menlo School by two games with one left to play.
It’s Woodside’s first PAL title, in any division, since winning the 2016 Ocean Division championship.
Amoroso, a junior, threw his second complete game of the season, allowing three runs while scattering five hits as he improved to 9-0 on the mound and lowered his ERA to 1.95.
Offensively, Amoroso went 3 for 5 with two doubles and three RBIs. Connor Davison and Ryan Dodge drove in three each, as well, with Dodge going deep.
Woodside (11-2 PAL Ocean, 20-3-1 overall) jumped on El Camino (6-7, 12-10) right away, scoring three runs in the top of the first.
The Wildcats led 6-3 after five innings before putting the game away with four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
South City 8, Priory 1
The Warriors closed the gap between themselves and the Panthers after beating first-place Priory in the first game of a two-game series that will decide the PAL Lake Division champion.
It is the first loss in Lake play for Priory (13-1 PAL Lake, 13-3 overall).
Giovanni Bernal was in complete control on the mound for South City (12-2, 20-5), pitching a complete-game, five-hitter. He allowed one earned run, struck out five and didn’t walk a batter.
The Warriors gave Bernal all the run support he would need following a six-run second inning.
Martin Chen, Bernal, and Vince Bernal all drove in two runs for the Warriors.
Matt Lee drove in Priory’s only run.
The teams will meet again Thursday in South City to decide the PAL Division title.
Serra 8, Bellarmine 0
The Padres opened the WCAL tournament by blanking the Bells in San Mateo.
Second-seeded Serra (21-5), will host No. 3 Mitty in a semifinal game Wednesday.
Serra scored in each of the first four innings — scoring two in the second and three in the fourth — to pull away for the win. Jake Downing homered and drove in a team-high three runs for the Padres, who also got two RBIs from Joey Damelio.
Braden Agosta got the win, giving up four hits in five innings of work.
