Mercy-Burlingame posted a 4-1 record Saturday at the Varsity Panther Challenge, a daylong volleyball tournament hosted by Presentation in San Jose.

The Bears (9-3) swept through pool play, knocking off Hillsdale, Presentation and Leigh-San Jose in straight sets, before sweeping Capuchino 25-18, 25-16 in the tournament semifinals. In the championship matchup with Redwood-Larkspur, Mercy fell 25-13, 25-18, despite senior outside hitter Ava Cacao recording 10 kills with a .471 hitting percentage.
Cacao totaled double-digit kills in each of Mercy’s five matches in the tourney. She opened with a double-double of 11 kills and 10 digs against Hillsdale, and again recorded double-double numbers in the semis with 12 kills and 11 digs against Capuchino.
Cacao totaled 58 kills and 32 digs in the tourney. Middle blocker Mia Ferdinand recorded 10 blocks, including two blocks to go with 11 kills in the semifinals. The 6-1 senior now has 34 blocks on the year, averaging 1.2 blocks per set. Senior setter Clare O’Brien totaled six aces on the day.
