Serra wins tourney
After suffering two straight blowout losses, the Serra basketball team was in desperate need of a confidence boost. The Padres got it after winning the Tim Cole Memorial Classic last week. Serra (7-3) defeated tournament host American High of Fremont 61-45 in the championship game. Tommy McMahon scored 17 points and Chaz Thomas had 12. Decensae White and Will Powers added 10 points each.
Serra rolled through the field, defeating Foothill 68-59 in the first round and Washington of Fremont 69-47 in the semifinals. White earned tournament Most Valuable Player honors after averaging 18 points per game, and Thomas and McMahon made it to the all-tournament team. The victory was just what the doctor ordered for the Padres, who entered the tournament having lost to Woodside and Santa Cruz by a combined 32 points, both of which came at home.
