When the Carlmont girls' soccer team had their leading scorer sent off the field after picking up her second yellow card of the game, there was no panic on the part of coach Jim Kelly.
He inserted freshman Kelly Cunningham to replace Andrea Carrara. Cunningham was seeing the first varsity action of her career, having been called up from frosh-soph for the CCS tournament.
But Cunningham is no stranger to scoring goals. She scored 26 for the frosh-soph team this season and came up with the game-winner Saturday as the top-seeded Scots knocked off No. 8 Leland 1-0 in overtime in the Central Coast Section Division I tournament at Pioneer High in Cupertino.
"I told her they're very vulnerable if you just stay up top," Kelly said.
Shea Finnegan sent a perfect through pass and Cunningham raced onto the ball for a breakaway goal with four minutes left in the second 10-minute overtime period.

For Kelly, he was just relieved to come away with a win. The quarterfinals haven't been kind to the Scots in the past.
"We just needed to get over that hump of the quarterfinals, which we haven't done the last couple of years," Kelly said.
Carlmont (19-1-3) actually breathed a sigh of relief when Leland (7-8-7) missed a penalty kick in the first half. The Scots had a couple of chances to win it regulation, but could not convert.
With Carrara being sent off after receiving two yellow cards, she is done for the rest of the tournament. Her first yellow was for colliding with the goalkeeper. The second, a judgement call at best, was an intentional handball which carries an automatic yellow card and for Carrara, the ejection.
