Nolan Levinson fired five innings of two-hit shutout baseball and Derek Armstrong struck out the side in the sixth to close it out as Alpine advanced through the winners’ bracket at Trinta Park against Belmont-Redwood Shores. It was the tourney opener for both teams.
Levinson locked up with Belmont-Redwood Shores starting pitcher Van Sloan, who surrendered one run through four innings before handing the ball to the bullpen. Charlie Goldstein produced that third-inning run with a two-out single to plate Simeon Ouellette-Massiou. Alpine got an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Jack Chambers came around to score in an inning that featured singles by Garrett Weiss, Teddy Hourigan and Patrick Breslin.
Belmont stranded three runners in scoring position through the first two innings, and had its best chance in the second. Grant Grites led off with a walk and Donte Corpuz followed with a one-out single before both moved up on a wild pitch to put runners at second and third. Levinson pitched through the jam, though, notching back-to-back strikeouts. He recorded 11 strikeouts on the day.
Alpine advances through the winners’ bracket to face Foster City in the tourney quarterfinals Thursday at 5 p.m.
Belmont-Redwood Shores plays an elimination game Monday at 5 p.m. against San Mateo National.
Foster City 4, Menlo-Atherton 1
With the game tied 1-1 in the third inning, Foster City broke out by sending nine batters to the plate amid a three-run rally. Preston Spachis gave Foster City the lead with an RBI triple to knock home Colin Atkinson. After a Veer Gehani walk, Connor Chapeton drove in Spachis with a one-out single. Gehani then scored on a two-out single by Skylar Ide.
Starting pitcher Oliver Xia worked five innings, allowing one run while striking out five. Menlo-Atherton scored its only run in the second. Carter Herberts drew a one-out walk, moved around to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch, then crossed the plate on an RBI groundout off the bat of Zack Trailer.
Ryu Fujimoto closed out the win, firing a perfect sixth inning while ending it on back-to-back strikeouts.
Foster City, by virtue of its second straight win, advances through the winners’ bracket to face Alpine in the tourney quarterfinals Thursday at 5 p.m.
Menlo-Atherton falls to the elimination bracket to face Palo Alto at Trinta Park, Monday, at 5:30 p.m.
Pacifica 3, San Mateo American 2

Pacifica rallied for three runs in the top of the first inning and rode them to a win over host San Mateo American at Trinta Park. Pacifica loaded the bases for Josh Aleman to drive home Carson Bancroft on an infield single. Brady Christiansen was then hit by a pitch to force home Mateo Almaquer, and Brandon Jasso singled home Jackson Coller to make it 3-0.
Coller worked four innings as Pacifica’s starting pitcher, and navigated trouble in the fourth. Alex Bayer got American on the board with an RBI double to score Mazin Khoury. Bayer later scored on a two-out infield single by Zach Marinec. Coller buckled down to end the inning with his second strikeout of the day.
Almaquer closed out the win with two scoreless innings of relief.
Marinec was stellar out of the American bullpen in relief of starter Carter Wells. The right-hander fired four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while setting down 12 of the 13 batters he faced.
Pacifica now advances through the winners’ bracket to face Hillsborough, Thursday, at 5:30 p.m.
American will take the field again Wednesday in an elimination game at 5:30 p.m.
Hillsborough 11, San Carlos 3
Finn Rowbotham enjoyed a big day, going 4 for 4 with two doubles, a home run and six RBIs as Hillsborough won its tournament opener at Trinta Park over San Carlos.
Rowbotham got Hillsborough on the board in the third inning with an RBI single to score Will Duffel. After William DeMartini got hit by a pitch, Will Cantwell delivered a two-run single to right. Cantwell then scored on a single by Easton Andreachi. Rowbotham then doubled home two runs in the fourth, and capped his day with a two-run home run in the sixth.
Duffel earned the win on the mound with four innings of work, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five. Thomas Ramirez closed it out, allowing one unearned run through two innings of work.
Tommy Jacobson added two hits and two RBIs for Hillsborough, and Andreachi also recorded two hits. Evan Zalabak paced San Carlos with a 2-for-2 day with a double and three RBIs, while Alex Cha added two hits with a double.
Hillsborough now advances to the winners’ bracket quarterfinals to face Pacifica at Trinta Park, Thursday, at 5:30 p.m.
San Carlos falls to the elimination bracket to face Redwood City, Tuesday, at 5:30 p.m.
