Alpine dropped the hammer, scoring in every inning to record a five-inning, mercy-rule victory over Palo Alto at Middlefield Ballpark.
Eleven of Alpine’s 12 batters recorded hits, including late home runs by Charles Saste and Derek Armstrong. Saste went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and it was his RBI double in the first that got Alpine on the board. Simeon Ouellette-Massiou added two hits and two RBIs, Dylan Dossola had two hits with a double, and Teddy Hourigan had a single and two RBIs.
Starting pitcher Bodhi Bedner earned the win, needing just 37 pitches to throw 2 1/3 shutout innings. Bedner allowed one hit, one walk and one hit batter, and Max Turner and Armstrong finished it out in relief. For Palo Alto, Alonso Ontiveros Herrera took the start, and Philip Sheng, Ian Nilsen and Charles Reiss pitched in relief.
Paly scored their lone run in the fourth, setting the table when Liam Murphy got hit by a pitch and Wyatt Fletcher reached on a bunt single. Ontiveros Herrera then hit a grounder that scored Murphy on a throwing error.
With the win, Alpine advances to the tourney semifinals through the winners’ bracket to face San Mateo American, Saturday, at 10 a.m. Palo Alto falls to the elimination bracket and plays against Friday.
