While state champion College of San Mateo continues to lead the JC Athletic Bureau’s poll of California Community College Football Coaches Association members, there was a slight shuffle among others in the top four this week.
CSM took eight first place votes and its Bay 6 League rival City College of San Francisco grabbed the other two to move into a tie with Riverside City College for the No. 2 spot in the rankings, just one vote ahead of Mt. San Antonio. All are 4-0, as is Fullerton, which moved up one position to No. 5.
Not only is CSM ranked No. 1 in the state, the Bulldogs are ranked No. 1 in the country in the Massey Computer Rankings.
Both CSM and Riverside escaped with narrow wins last week. San Mateo led throughout its non-league contest with visiting American River. But the Bulldogs had to stop a 2-point conversion try by ARC with 20 seconds remaining to record a national pacesetting tenth straight win, 24-23.
The Beavers scored a pair of touchdowns within two minutes at the end to set-up the dramatic conclusion and fell only one spot, to No. 6, in this week’s poll.
CSM quarterback Anthony Grigsby completed 23 of 36 passes for 288 yards and two scores against American River, with Anthony Freeman catching seven passes for 75 yards.

Caleb Ojeda kicked a 39-yard field goal against ARC and now has tallied 33 points, to lead all NorCal kick scorers. He is the top overall scorer in the Bay 6.
Grigsby is averaging 336 yards a game, with a 168.5 efficiency rating, and has 10 touchdown passes.
Freeman also continues to pace the state’s National Division players with a 31.0 yard average on kickoff returns and 28.3 on punt returns. Including rushing and receiving, he leads the Bay 6 League in all-purpose running with 135.0 yards per game.
CSM closes out pre-league play on Saturday at No. 9 Butte (3-1) in Oroville at 1 p.m.
Riverside, the 2022 3C2A state runner-up, had to rally at the end to win its National Southern League opener at Palomar, 45-44. Mt. SAC spoiled the National Central debut of Citrus, 42-21, ending a Citrus’ 17-game win streak.
