The College of San Mateo softball team clinched at least a share of an 11th Coast Conference championship, with a little help from an upcoming opponent.
CSM’s 10-0, mercy-rule victory over visiting Ohlone-Fremont on Tuesday, coupled with fourth-place Cabrillo’s 7-6 upset of second place West Valley, gave the Lady Bulldogs a two-game Coast lead with two games remaining — and therefore no worse than a co-championship.
CSM (11-1 Coast, 35-1 overall) hosts sixth-place Monterey Peninsula (4-7, 9-22) Thursday and then visits Cabrillo (8-4, 28-8) in Tuesday’s league finale, both at 3 p.m.
West Valley (9-3, 33-4) and Hartnell (9-3, 29-8) will settle their now second-place deadlock Thursday in Saratoga.
Hannah Ames had a pair of doubles and scored a run in Tuesday’s win over Ohlone. Ames started a five-run second inning with her first RBI double and brought home another run  with another two-bagger in the third frame. Lola Sierra got the win with two innings of shutout pitching and is now 21-1 on the season.
CSM holds onto No. 1 state ranking
CSM, despite having it’s 48-game winning streak stopped by Hartnell last week, maintains its No. 1 ranking in this week’s state coaches poll, ahead of No. 2 Palomar College (32-1). West Valley is third. Hartnell moved up to No. 8, while Cabrillo occupies the No. 15 position.
The Coast Conference, arguably the toughest of the state’s nine leagues, has four teams in the top 15.
