The Burlingame boys' golf team finished one of its best seasons in the school's history with a fourth-place finish Tuesday in the Central Coast Section tournament at Rancho Cañada Golf Course in Carmel.
Coach Ed Larios said it's been at least 20 years since the Panthers have enjoyed this kind of success on the links. Burlingame went through Peninsula Athletic League play undefeated and had one of its highest finishes in CCS play.
The Panthers' total of 379 was the highest total for any public school. First place went to Bellarmine (358), Robert Louis Stevenson (363) was second and St. Francis was third (365).
Individually, Burlingame's Andruw Sanchez finished in a tie for fourth place with a 1-over 72. He was in a five-way tie for fourth and played in a playoff to determine who would be the fourth golfer to advance to the Northern California tournament. Menlo School's Colin Peck won the playoff to advance.
Sanchez's fourth-place finish capped a stellar high school career.
"We hadn't won a league match until he got here," Larios said. "And he's leaving with two PAL Bay Division championships."
The other members of the Burlingame shot the following: Matt Garcia and Matt Tierney each shot 75, Chad Lake came in with a 78 and Steven Maltz was a shot back at 79.
