BALCO founder's ex-wife sentenced to rehab
The ex-wife of BALCO founder Victor Conte was ordered into a drug rehabilitation program rather than a state prison for an alleged methamphetamine addiction yesterday.
Audrey Conte, 48, of San Mateo pleaded no contest to methamphetamine possession and being under the influence May 23, 10 days after she was placed on felony probation for the same charge. Police reportedly found a small amount of the drug in her bra.
In return, Conte was sentenced to one year in county jail which will be modified as soon as officials find a rehabilitation program for her. She requires a program that can handle both her drug and psychiatric problems, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
Conte has become known by association with her ex-husband, the founder of a company now under federal investigation for distributing performance enhancing drugs to athletes. Although she is not linked to any of the steroid charges, Conte has a long history of personal drug problems.
On May 13, Conte was sentenced to 120 days already served and probation. Those charges stemmed from the previous year but had been suspended while her competency for trial was questioned.
Conte has been in custody in lieu of $10,000 bail.
Conte is not directly connected to the Bay Area Laboratory Cooperative but did run the homeopathic medicine store Millbrae Holistic with her ex-husband, Victor. After the couple divorced, Victor Conte changed the store into Burlingame-based BALCO.
Man faces trial for stabbing girlfriend repeatedly
The 25-year-old Redwood City man accused of stabbing his girlfriend a dozen times as her 4-year-old daughter watched will stand trial on attempted murder charges, a judge ruled yesterday.
Wayne Selu, Jr. has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, inflicting great bodily injury and assault with a deadly weapon in the April 18 attack. However, Judge Steven Dylina decided that enough evidence exists to try Selu.
Selu reportedly attacked his girlfriend in front of his North Fair Oaks apartment complex where they stood with her young child. The 24-year-old woman told authorities she was breaking up with Selu, her boyfriend of about a year, when he stabbed her a dozen times with a knife.
The victim underwent hours of surgery and Selu was arrested hours later.
Selu has no criminal history in San Mateo County. He remains in custody on no-bail status. He returns to court July 13 to enter a plea in Superior Court.
