I would like to know what the "controversy" over the proposed new Safeway is all about. What is so controversial about building a better store that will offer a wide variety of goods and services in a pleasant and convenient atmosphere? The current store is ugly and small. What is so controversial about more checkout stands and an improved parking lot? My opinion, not to mention the word around my neighborhood, is that the new store will be a great asset to all of Burlingame and Hillsborough.
The group who opposes the new store may call themselves Citizens for a Better Burlingame, but they contradict the name by fighting against what would be a substantial improvement to our city ... a better Safeway.
I and many others find ourselves having to go to either the San Mateo Safeway or the Millbrae Albertson's to find items not currently stocked because of lack space at this Safeway. Is that good for Burlingame? I think not! Please do not let the egocentric motivations of this small group overshadow the good this new store will bring.
