Editor,

The Trump administration’s moves to weaken air pollution standards make a clear statement of valuing corporate interests over public health. My disgust with this betrayal of public trust has become more urgent after experiencing severe air pollution firsthand. I just returned from traveling throughout Chile and was shocked by the contrast between the country’s natural beauty and the terrible air quality, even in small towns. Loose or non-enforced vehicle emissions standards are clearly a driving cause; the streets were filled with visible clouds of eye and lung-searing vehicle exhaust. There is no justification for wanting to return to that state after decades of effort spent cleaning up America’s urban air.
