The Trump administration’s moves to weaken air pollution standards make a clear statement of valuing corporate interests over public health. My disgust with this betrayal of public trust has become more urgent after experiencing severe air pollution firsthand. I just returned from traveling throughout Chile and was shocked by the contrast between the country’s natural beauty and the terrible air quality, even in small towns. Loose or non-enforced vehicle emissions standards are clearly a driving cause; the streets were filled with visible clouds of eye and lung-searing vehicle exhaust. There is no justification for wanting to return to that state after decades of effort spent cleaning up America’s urban air.
Does the Trump administration really think our air is too clean or are they simply confident that relaxed pollution standards will make money for their donors without unduly impacting air quality at Mar-a-Lago?
