Editor,
As we move toward the inevitable and very expensive ousting of the county sheriff, perhaps it is time to rethink some of the folks for whom we vote.
In our cities, we do not vote for the police chief or the fire chief. These are people who are thoroughly vetted by staff and eventually approved by a City Council whom we have elected. How many of us really do a thorough investigation of people running for positions such as sheriff, judges and coroner? Perhaps, in the early days of the county when the population was smaller, voters may have personally known the candidates for these positions. It is time to think about amending the county’s charter so that these positions are filled by county supervisors and staff after a thorough vetting and interview process.
Although we will be giving up our vote, the result will be higher quality of individuals filling these positions and thus better service to members of our community.

Thanks for your letter, Mr. Howard. I’d say that because we’re having a problem with a San Mateo County’s sheriff doesn’t mean it applies to other locales with elected sheriffs. Having a sheriff under the “thumb” of county supervisors isn’t necessarily a good thing either. For instance, there are areas with county supervisors who support providing aid and comfort to invaders of our country. Having a sheriff that must kowtow to their will isn’t the best thing for their citizens. I’d say there are advantages and disadvantages to both systems. In our case, we just happen to be living in a time when our elected sheriff is a problem. There’s no guarantee it will occur in the future with other elected sheriffs.
Terence, well said. And though no system is perfect, I believe giving up the power of our vote, one of the last remaining civil right we enjoy, should always be a last resort.
