Crown Castle has aggressively pushed to install 5G wireless equipment on poles in front of homes across San Mateo for years. While the city recently passed a new ordinance to protect residents (mandating a 300-foot setback) there are still 10 applications that fall outside this rule.
One particularly outrageous proposal at 535 Clark Drive would extend equipment over the sidewalk, directly invading residents’ views. This location blatantly violates the “least obtrusive location” requirement of the ordinance, especially since a nearby island could accommodate the installation, positioning it much further from homes. Has the city tacitly encouraged Crown Castle to avoid using these islands, or is it merely a ploy by Crown Castle to dodge permit costs?
Public Works has wrongly approved this application twice, ignoring clear violations of the ordinance. Crown Castle’s applications have been riddled with falsehoods and they failed to prove 535 Clark is the least intrusive option. Yet, Public Works has let them endlessly amend their submissions instead of Denying them outright.
Public Works claims it cannot prohibit these installations, but it certainly can enforce the ordinance and prioritize the interests of residents. Instead, they are allowing Crown Castle to run roughshod over our community. Residents deserve accountability. We need Public Works to uphold the rules and take action against these flawed applications? Enough is enough. We demand Public Works start working for the public. Deny this permit and others like it that violate our ordinance.
