Editor,
I am writing to express my gratitude and appreciation for the Oakland Zoo and their hardworking staff for their efforts in preserving and protecting California’s native species.
This week the Oakland Zoo opened a 56-acre trail that is a dedicated and protected home for more than eight native Californian animal species. The trail has been opened to demonstrate active efforts toward the conservation of the animals. Northern California is developing more and more every day and we are slowly pushing our native animals aside and taking over their land. These species need a natural, healthy habitat to flourish in.
The eight species that roam the zoo’s new trail are thriving in their new environment. It is important that we take care of the animals as best we can and not just have them around to look at. Oakland has done a beautiful job of being a heartfelt advocate for these native species. I am pleased to hear that the public can finally go view all the hard work they put into this habitat.
I hope seeing the animals up close and personal inspires people to have a different level of appreciation for animals in California and all over the world. I would like to see more Californians potentially donate their time or money to the efforts keeping these animals healthy and happy. My wish is that people learn from this new and exciting opening in the Oakland Zoo and give back to an important cause: protecting our animals.
