“Management-by-wandering-around” was my key takeaway from business school long ago. Kudos to Jackie Speier for again spending a night in one of our homeless shelters. Her face-to-face encounters enlightened her to their issues more than any number of written reports. Experienced and wise, we are fortunate to have her “wander” San Mateo County on our behalf.

Thanks for your letter, Mr. Huening. I feel Ms. Speier is practicing performative politics to appear to be doing something while not actually doing anything. What would be more effective is if Ms. Speier would welcome some of these homeless folks into her house, setting an example. Perhaps if Ms. Speier could provide a written report of that experience, others with the same mindset would do the same.
