Editor,
Today, June 1, as I was driving east on State Route 92 over the Crystal Springs Reservoir causeway just before the traffic light, something very hard, I assume a rock, hit my driver’s side window like a rocket.Â
Had my window been open, the object would have torn into my head. Some months ago, at the exact same spot, an object exploded the sunroof (metal and plexiglass) of my daughter’s Volvo. Had her sunroof been open, she would have died. She held the sunroof liner with one hand to keep it closed so the glass and metal shards wouldn’t rain down on her and drove straight to our mechanic’s shop.
I checked with authorities to see if an overhead airplane had dropped something. There was no such report; the offered explanation was that some object had come from southbound Interstate 280, which is just above and very near 92 at that point. So now it has happened twice to our family. Just by luck, she and I are still alive. I wonder how many other vehicles have been hit by objects at this location. Too often it takes a death before a problem like this is addressed: Some innocent soul is driving home and suddenly is killed by a rock spun off 280.
I am CC’ing supervisors Mueller and Corzo and asking that they bring this matter up with Caltrans and take immediate steps to protect drivers on State Route 92 from debris ejected from Interstate 280.
