Editor,
Letter writer Chris Cavigioli (“Did everyone want toll lanes on 101?” in the Dec. 13 edition of the San Mateo Daily Journal) hit the nail on the head.
The express toll lanes give priority to people who can afford to pay extra while penalizing those who can’t with tougher traffic. These changes were not made with easing traffic for everyone in mind, but rather with an end profit as the goal. Tax dollars are at work on these roads and are being used to create another cash cow at the expense of the very taxpayers who are using them. Overpayment of administrative officials, poor management of funds and lack of true upkeep and maintenance on our roads continually moves government toward raising fees and finding new and creative ways to nickel and dime people.
When these lanes officially open for business, next year, the agencies responsible for implementing this change will have helped contribute to traffic congestion and drive times for the many while easing commutes and collecting additional funds from the few. Congratulations to the reverse Robin Hoods of government.

Unfortunately, Mr. Currier, this penalty for the hoi polloi is to obtain funding for ever increasing pensions and benefits – somebody has to pay for them. Meanwhile, those that can’t afford to use the no-longer “free” lane will continue to use the “free” lanes and increase our area’s emissions via higher congestion. Elections have consequences. You get the government you voted for.
Agree 100%, Mr. Currier. Caltrans and our "transit officials" continue to penalize commuters for staying in their cars while providing NO workable alternative in public transportation. Huge buses, mostly empty due to poor routing, safety concerns, and woeful on-time records, clog our streets and rather than replace them with more innovative and workable alternatives transit officials reduce parking, increase tolls, and add pay-to-use lanes in order to "force" commuters onto non-existent public transit alternatives. What a brainless way to run a highway and commuter system.
