Sometimes the government and NGOs need to work together to help some of our hardest working neighbors BE neighbors. Subsidized or below market housing for teachers, first responders, hospital workers, and others, without whom life would be extremely difficult, is a worthwhile investment. I spent my first seven years in subsidized housing until my parents reached a point where they were earning enough for us to move into a two family home as renters. They pinched every penny until they could do that. My father worked 45 years for one company and my mom was a medical center receptionist for over 25 years. They saved and saved and were able to buy a condo when they retired. My mom was a union rep and worked hard to get living wages for all the workers in her medical system. My generation was the first that went to college. My father, brother and I all served in the Armed Forces and yes, got rewarded for that service with benefits like college tuition and low interest mortgages with low down payments. That's "Americanism" at its best!

Is not home ownership socialist housing? Mortgage interest deductions for example.
