Your Jan. 18 article “City Council reimagines El Camino Real” on the redesign for El Camino Real in Millbrae mentioned the possibility of a “road diet” to shrink the number of lanes. This dumb idea seems to be in fashion among many Peninsula cities.
I just drove along ECR in Millbrae yesterday, there were tons of cars stacked up in all three lanes from Millbrae Avenue to Meadow Glen. It seems absurd to be considering this with all the new housing Millbrae has built near the BART station. I hope the City Council will pass on that design.
Mr. Guion, thanks for your letter. There’s no need for this ECR project, as evidenced by the article not describing any problems with the existing median. This non-required project is essentially another union labor giveaway. Basically, we have the equivalent of dig a hole, fill it up. Voters get the government they deserve.
Besides, doesn’t Millbrae have more pressing issues, such as trying to force a homeless hotel on Millbrae residents? Also, didn’t Millbrae pay $100,000 to consultants in an effort to convince business owners to pony up their hard-earned money for an improvement district? To pay for services the city should already be providing (cleaning streets) and to pay for potential new competition (in the form of new merchants)?
