State law says current sheriff terms run through 2028. The supes cannot override that.
A caretaker sheriff might sue rather than leave on 01/27. Also, we need a highly competent, seasoned law enforcement officer, not a caretaker.
So, we’re back to appointment or special election, and Simon argues sidestepping the “power play” rhetoric justifies the latter. But no, please. That was always a bogus argument, a Team Corpus smokescreen. Charging that the supes or Callagy want to micromanage one department out of 30 is absurd. Just as we should turn our back on the Corpus era, we should stop reacting to its propaganda.
There are obvious strong candidates, starting with former Assistant Sheriff Monaghan. I hope and expect the supes to just appoint one, and avert more hideous waste of time and money.
