In regards to the article “Coastal advocates defend marine sanctuaries” in the July 15 edition of the Daily Journal, it is backwards for a president to unilaterally undo what took advocates decades to bring forth in protections for our coast.
On any given day, you see people of different ethnicities on the Pacifica Pier fishing through the night. Thousands of people on the levee: dog walkers, families with children in strollers and bicycles, seniors socializing with friends, people exercising or fishing from the shore. We watch pods of whales and dolphins and, further out, we see boats of every size fishing or sightseeing. We have clean, protected waters that continue to rebound because of California’s laws and the Monterrey Bay National Marine Sanctuary beyond.
In addition to the billions of dollars brought into our economy by tourism, recreation, commercial fishing and real estate, every day there are voters on the shore who would not want to see a reversal of their quality of life because of offshore oil drilling. There would be such a fury if voters seeking alternative energy on land were to have their waters polluted offshore.
