President Donald Trump may want to expand offshore oil drilling, but it’s no surprise he’s facing pushback in a region known for being one of the most at risk of climate change and where residents are increasingly turning to renewable energy.

San Mateo County officials are urging the federal government to keep protections in place for three national marine sanctuaries spanning the surrounding California coastline.

This makes no sense. There is a surplus of oil in the world, and the world is moving away from fossil fuels. All those hydrocarbons under the sea floor should stay there where they will do no harm.

While I agree with the protected status for our coast... you have to wonder where we are going with big government 'owning' so much land...The fact is that in the West...The federal government owns 85 percent of Nevada, 52 percent of Oregon, 45 percent of California, 69 percent of Alaska and 57 percent of Utah....In the Bay Area, 80% of the land is in some form of open space/restricted designation...Careful of the unintended consequences...such as impacting the costs of living, which in turn disproportionately impacts low income families...
