Promoters of Proposition T (SCOOT tax) carry out their egocentric agenda blatantly ignoring the reason for Prop 13. The Fire Department tax failed because the city was insensitive to job uncertainty and the economic crunch. The tax bite was beyond the budgets of many citizens.
Now it's SCOOT — a scam to collect big bucks becomes the financial responsibility of non-users and those who are financially strapped with exploding property taxes, mortgages, insurance premiums, health insurance and critically-needed prescriptions while incomes are shrinking. Perhaps the citizens with the homes valued at a million dollars or higher won't notice the humble $5 a month rip-off, but to me, and many others, it is survival.
If the riders don't pay for SCOOT, then end the taxi-type service. I have tough budgetary choices to make too. It should be noted that, contrary to city remarks, seniors have been tipping drivers up to $2 (though not every driver takes it). The promoters of SCOOT are shortsighted. Their justification propaganda, like our streets (missing out on the measure funds these past two years), contain endless holes. How many times have cities and states hemorrhaged in the wake of free political schemes.
