The last few weeks, the local papers have been reporting on the great Millbrae Trash (Garbage) Debate regarding a new price and contract with South San Francisco Scavengers. I have read the reports with interest being a Millbrae resident and am getting more confused with each new report.
Most confusing is the City Council and new city manager's interpretation of a price based on the average of the adjacent cities costs. A rate comparison chart of costs on a 32 gal. container in one of the papers showed the following: Burlingame $10.72; San Bruno $17.22; San Mateo $19.77; So. S.F. $19.17; Brisbane $15.07. Adding these and dividing by 5 shows an average cost of $16.49. How does City Hall arrive at a new price of $19.90, Garbage plus an added 5 percent?
Ah and the plus 5 percent, is this a hidden cover up instead of the proposed $2 per household per month to pay for street repairs due to the garbage trucks wear on our streets? How about charging the Garbage Co as well as UPS and FedEx? They use and abuse the streets, we don't.
Let us have an honest program to achieve a fair and best cost for Millbrae residents and cut out all the chicanery. Open the bidding and let the best company with the best price and service win. The alternate solution would be to have a total recall of our council. It appears they are not working in our best interest.
