We were distressed to read Margot Leong's May 7 column, " A Stuttering Fool or a Suave Communicator?"
We who stutter have a problem with the media's using the term "stuttering" in a noxious conversational sense. When that happens, it perpetuates the myth that those who stutter are "fools," or incompetent. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
Some present day examples are actors James Earl Jones, Julia Roberts, and Bruce Willis, statesman Winston Churchill, businessmen Jack Welch of GE and Walter Wriston of Citibank. A list of the many famous people who stutter can be found at www.stutteringhelp.org.
For accurate information about stuttering, offered free of charge, your readers may visit us at www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartamudez.org or call toll-free, 800-992-9392.
