I’d like to share with all of my neighbors in San Mateo County the unspeakable pain associated with opening the mail and finding my/your name on a jury summons. I’m not seeking sympathy for being selected, I’m seeking “reasonable compensation.” From the moment I/we enter the courthouse in Redwood City, and then the Jury Assembly Room, and then Judge Buchwald’s court room, I/we are continually reminded by the powers-to-be, how terribly important we are as prospective jurors and the jurisprudence system is completely dependent upon our ability to be impartial, firm, fair and just.
I’m reminded of that dictum that says, ‘when you are good at something, you don’t do it for free.’ These days, jurors receive $15 per day starting the second day and 34.5 cents per mile one way only. If we are so important to the system, why not compensate jurors $100 per day starting on day one and 50 cents per mile round trip and a free lunch for the duration of jury duty if selected to serve on a jury? After all, if Jim Harnett, an employee of Caltrain/SamTrans can be awarded a $50,000 bonus for his good performance (bringing his yearly salary to over $543,000), why can’t jurors enjoy healthier compensation? Nugget of an idea, right?
