The community forum on Taser use scheduled for Monday, Feb. 11, was promised to be “both informative and balanced.” Press accounts of the plan for the meeting sounded as if a small number of speakers would be equally from those representing county officialdom and Taser makers, balanced by those questioning Taser use (“Officials to hold Taser use forum” in the Feb. 8 edition of the Daily Journal).
The now published agenda looks anything but balanced. Now 70 percent of the long list of scheduled speakers work either for county officialdom or for makers of Tasers. Only one speaker from the American Civil Liberties Union is scheduled to represent the many groups questioning Taser use. Community members who come to speak can expect to be limited to about two minutes. No time limit is indicated for the officials and their lawyers. If they are long-winded, which would not be surprising, their sheer numbers could easily use up most of the time. Perhaps we will need another forum to balance out this one?
