Regarding the Sept. 9 story, “Developer sees housing towers as way to help seniors,” I would hope the developer includes funding for training and equipment to handle fires in high rises. Currently, there are no departments outside of San Francisco with the appropriate equipment and manpower to handle high-rise fires. Even a building of 20 stories would tax Peninsula, much less Redwood City fire departments.
Please note that a new high rise with seniors on the top floors in Seattle recently lost all use of its elevators for several weeks. An apartment flood leaked into the basement and flooded the elevators. No parts were available for weeks. Firefighters had to carry people and their belongings down 14 floors and rehouse them. It's not only fire that can be disastrous.
