Editor,
Once again we have another guest perspective on the topic of abortion where the author, the Rev. Dr. Tovis Page, fails to understand the core problem (“Other religious options” in the March 8 edition of the Daily Journal).
To avoid dealing with the crux of the controversy she paints Christianity as the villain. How novel. I would ask the author if she saw an infant being beaten to death would she intervene? If she had a gun would she shoot the aggressor? She fails to acknowledge that there are people who believe that the infant deserves the same care and protection whether it is inside or outside of the woman’s body. Should they be vilified because they have a different view than the author of when life begins? Does the author and her viewpoint deserve a seat at the table? Absolutely. However, so do those who oppose abortion. Currently neither side is willing to sit at the same table with the other. Until that happens there can be no middle ground, no honest debate.
One would have thought that someone in the reverend’s position would have held out a welcoming hand rather than an accusatory finger.

Dr. Page didn’t blame religion! She blamed certain religion-infested people for how they use religion to force their own twisted views on other people, and how they even use weapons to deprive women of heir natural right to control their own bodies, which should be no one else’s business, no matter how “religious” they claim to be.
Again, we’re back to the simple concept that if you are against abortion, just don’t have one!
Thanking you for sharing your thoughts on Islam
On behalf of my Muslim friends and loved ones, I am calling you out. You owe an apology for this remark. You seem to know as little about Islam as you do about the teachings of Jesus.
Ignorance rears it's ugly head again, thank you Westy. Let me help since you appear to be unaware of the countries that are run by the religion of Islam. Check out the rights of women in Saudi Arabia (oh boy they can drive), Iran (none) , Afghanistan women lost their rights, were tortured and many lost their lives after Joe Biden pulled out of the country. Little girls are castrated at a young age, do you have problem with that or are you just a Christian hater?
FGM is practised by the Dawoodi Bohra, a sect of Shia Islam with one million members in India. Known as khatna, khafz, and khafd, the procedure is performed on six- or seven-year-old girls and involves the total or partial removal of the clitoral hood.
There are plenty of good muslim individuals who live in the US and abroad, but then are countless countries that adhere to the strict teachings of Islam and their barbaric practices.
Not sure what your point is Not So Common. These places are implementing the same sorts of controls over women and girls that you advocate, and with exactly the same sorts of religious rationales.
You can't make hateful generalizations about Islam and then say "there are plenty of good Muslim individuals". Or I guess you can if you are a total hypocrite.
It is notable that all the anti-choice responses appear to be from men. The men are 50% responsible for the pregnancy. If a woman is forced to have the baby the father should be required to provide child support for 18 years. This could be court-ordered after a DNA-proved paternity test.
Thanks for your letter, Mr. Howard. Is it any wonder that many wars have started and continue to this day due to religion? Apparently there are more folks in the reverend’s position who prefer war rather than peace, and who prefer death rather than life.
Note today's Scott Peterson story where the fetus is called "unborn child." Looks as though life begins when we say it does.
Mr Howard, Dr Page pointed out that religion is used by many to oppress people, especially women. She advocates for religion that is not based on controlling others. I agree with her that the abuse practiced by many religious people in using it to control others actually makes real religion less accessible for many.
There are many other ways that you could work to reduce abortions if you really believed them to be wrong, other than legislating against medical care for pregnant people. For example, you could advocate for sex education in schools, for free birth control, for free infant and child care, work to ban in vitro fertilization (if you really think a fertilized egg is a "child"), and so on. Instead the religious right works to restrict access to birth control and sex education, and works against spending any tax money on supporting parents with small children. To me, it is glaringly clear that the real agenda of the "religious" right is not to reduce abortions, but rather to control and subjugate women.
Please tell us Westy when does "life" begin and how do you personally know this? Are you God? Individuals who don't believe in abortion have the greater good in mind and when a woman makes a mistake (because only women can get pregnant), then asking her to sacrifice some discomfort to create a miracle so a child so that a may live and breathe is honorable. Believing life begins at conception has nothing to do with suppressing or oppressing women, it is recognizing there is value to every life and life should not be taken for granted and disposed of without a care. Aborting because of incest, rape and when a woman's life is at risk seems reasonable to me. To God? I don't know?
"Some discomfort"!?! Seriously? Obviously you have never known someone going through a difficult pregnancy, or who suffered a heart attack or stroke or sepsis or died as a result of pregnancy. Or who lost their job as a result of being pregnant.
Also, not only women get pregnant. Children as young as 10 get pregnant.
You might benefit from reviewing the ongoing difficulties with defining when a pregnant person's life is at risk and the stories of people who have suffered greatly as a result. Legislation that has stated "risk to mother's life" as an okay reason for a person to receive medical care have not specified it well enough that doctors feel safe to provide care until the patient is literally dying.
I encourage you to read people's personal abortion stories and try to develop a little compassion. If you don't like abortion, don't have one, but don't try to dictate other people's medical decisions.
You need to put your hate, over-reactions and exaggerations aside. 33 / 100,000 women unfortunately die during delivery or .00033%. So obviously complications can occur, but that doesn't mean people should so callously flush babies down a drain. Every time you drive there is a greater chance that you could be involved in accident. (1/366 every 1,000 miles driven) Permanent disabling injury could occur or even death, but does that mean you stop driving?
Not So Common, you are off by several decimal points. And you are very casual about the people who are doing the dying.
Also, it is double that in the state most likely to ban abortion health care.
It is about the same as kidney donations--so can we assume that would you be okay with being legally required to donate a kidney to save the life of an actual child?
Westy - as a reminder, it was Trump who signed of on a very generous tax deduction for child care as part of his tax reduction package "the religious right works to restrict access to birth control and sex education, and works against spending any tax money on supporting parents with small children." Wrong Westy, it is same package that Biden wants to cancel. What gives?
And to note, you may have seen an alarming increasing rate in STDs in our County, despite very liberal and highly funded sex education. Again, birth control does not seem very popular among some and get infected anyway, ostensibly regardless of the available information. Women are also complicit when it comes to sexual freedom but when a possible pregnancy occurs they are suddenly subjugated? .
Good evening, Westy
Steven has submitted several LTEs over the years. Although not everyone will agree with his points of view, his letters are largely sensible and thoughtful. In his most recent LTE, Steven has taken exception to Rev. Tovis Page vilifying Christians who oppose abortion. Your comments following Steven’s letter support Tovis’ belief that liberal and progressive religious people have allowed conservative religious people to dominate the public sphere. That belief was formed by Tovis’ immersion into culture wars thirty years ago and her later work for justice and freedom. I think we can agree that justice and freedom are things we should all work toward, and your suggestion that religious folks on the right side of the aisle can work to reduce abortions is a way to work toward justice and freedom. Yet justice and freedom for unborn children are the missing elements in Tovis’ call for social engagement to influence political policy concerning abortion. As a faith leader, shouldn’t her congregation expect her to speak the truth instead of continuing to promote progressive social change in an ongoing culture war? I understand the first principle of her religion is to uphold the inherent worth and dignity of every person. Should speaking the truth include upholding the inherent worth and dignity of an unborn child?
