Our aspirational governor has stated that California will counter Texas and create as many new Democratic districts as Texas creates Republican ones. He hopes his bombast will impress his Democratic colleagues and make them forget how poorly California has performed under his leadership.
However, let’s look a bit deeper at his statement. What’s going on in Texas is ridiculous and embarrassing, but we don’t live in Texas. The governor thinks that doing the same ridiculous and embarrassing thing in California is somehow heroic. The thing is that it is not California that is doing this and neither is it the people of California. It is the Democratic Party. The governor has basically said screw anyone who is not a Democrat. Forget about what’s right or fair. He sees this as a war with the Republicans, and it is the California Republicans, people who he is also supposed to represent, who are the collateral damage. This entire mess is an example of what was my theme in my previous letters-politicians placing party above the people they are supposed to represent. Politicians preach about their ability to reach across the aisle but apparently it’s only to try to strangle the person on the other side.
Unfortunately, it is the California taxpayer who will be picking up the more than $200 million tab for this special election. Forget the deficit. The party comes first. This is such a blatant gerrymandering ploy on the part of a political party it would be proper if there was a way to sue the governor to force the Democratic Party to pick up the tab for their hubris.
