A new bus depot, proposed and approved by the San Mateo-Foster City School District board, will take up residence this year behind Bayside Academy. The “EV Bus Charging and Warehouse at Bayside,” 35 buses will be housed and serviced there. What’s wrong with this picture? Lots.
Why Bayside Academy? Because the board unsuccessfully looked for a different location and determined that Bayside, with its large, unused blacktop space, fit the bill. But no effort was made to reach out to the residents, involving them in a decision that would directly impact their daily lives. No involvement or transparency.
Traffic gridlock: Kehoe Avenue is narrow and solidly residential. From Kehoe the buses move onto Norfolk — a main thoroughfare with only two lanes. Congested, particularly during commute hours. The school board believes that the buses will not add to the congestion — though traffic studies were not conducted to confirm this. Due diligence? None.
Student safety: The buses will enter the school area on the eastern one-lane road, looping around the back of the school. Last, departing on the west side via a current fire lane. How will the safety of the Bayside students be ensured? Crossing guards? New signage? None noted to date.
The buses purportedly will be relocated from College Park to Bayside Academy — from one equity priority community to another. They will transport students from other districts. Not Bayside students. Yet, Bayside Academy will carry the burden of this. Why?
Think about it.
