Editor,
The city of Burlingame has, and has had, major incompetencies in management evidenced by the dissatisfaction of police officers, firefighters, and other municipal employees (Daily Journal July 21 and Nov. 17, 2023).
In the case of the Police Department, the officer turnover rate, including experienced supervisors, is unacceptable and the dissatisfaction is documented by exit interviews. The firefighters vote-of-no confidence earlier this year is disconcerting but consistent considering Burlingame City Manager Lisa Goldman is the fire department chief administrative officer. That Burlingame municipal employees have voted to strike is no surprise.
City management fails to recognize that it is not an entity independent of its citizens. As few would responsibly respond to an employee grievance with an offer to find other employment, the managers cited might follow that advice.

Au contraire, Mr. Zwingle. If the "grievance" is about not being paid enough especially when one is under a prior negotiated union contract, that is exactly the response I would give an employee.
O.B., a “Grievance,” is a formal complaint by an employee or employee association that management is violating the terms of the contract, not
Simply complaining about pay.
