Kudos to the Burlingame City Council (“Burlingame officials reach affordable housing terms” in the Feb. 7 edition of the Daily Journal) for hammering out the deal for affordable housing, while retaining ownership of the land. I would recommend, however, that they give housing priority to city workers. We want them to be a part of the community and we will need them close at hand in a disaster. It would also help with recruiting efforts. By offering the units at random, we would be subsidizing employers who refuse to pay livable wages.
You think that affordable housing should prioritize city workers? Knowing this, if your not a city worker why would you support this project. Why is giving subsidized public housing to public workers in the best interest of the public who is paying for it. When you build affordable housing only for one certain demographic you are not going to have public support. This is what is wrong with affordable housing, who ends up getting their housing subsidized and who doesn't. The city of Burlingame is for everyone, not just city workers.
