Our mainstream media is asleep as usual. In Israel, previous prime ministers Ehud Barak and Ehud Olmert have offered better answers than we’ve heard lately. Both stand for cease-fires and negotiations to end this spiral of murder. Olmert with Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Nasser al Kidwa have a plan to move past the endless repetition of violence and occupation and toward mutual security and real peace.
We need to stop the rogue Netanyahu settler regime, and end his efforts to start World War III with us in the middle. The United States should sponsor a Security Council resolution mandating a permanent regional cease-fire providing cover for Iran and Lebanon to not have to respond to Israeli provocations and to end the Houthi and Hezbollah actions in support of the Gazans. Sound difficult? It’s far easier than trying to weasel our way through this mess, while ignoring world opinion aghast at our hypocrisy.
Thanks for your letter, Mr. Caggiano, and your proposed solution. However, I have an easier solution – force Hamas to surrender unconditionally and return all hostages. How can we “force” Hamas? We can’t. Just as we can’t force Israel to cease-fire. As for “weaseling our way through this mess” we shouldn’t forget that this “mess” was caused by Hamas when in a surprise attack, they massacred 1000+ Israelis. Hamas made their bed so now they must lie in it and it’s their choice as to how long they want to extend the war. If it helps, take the approach that Israel is launching surprise attacks against Hamas and their supporters. If you’re going to give Hamas a pass, it’s only fair to give Israel a pass.
There can be no possible settlement of the war until Iran stops funding Hamas. Iran and Hamas have no interest in settling the war because they have western liberals on their side now. The cause of civilian casualties is Hamas hiding in hospitals, schools and homes. Israel captured the West Bank when it was attacked in the 6 day war and had they not, they probably wouldn't exist today.
