As I traveled north on Interstate 5 to Redding recently I couldn’t help but notice the many pieces of paper hanging from freeway overpasses thanking the various types of first responders. If you have never been to a fire zone, these kinds of messages are normally posted everywhere as a heart-felt expression of thanks. In recent weeks, I have seen signs in such places as Santa Rosa, Redding (Carr Fire) and near Yosemite (Ferguson Fire). No doubt these expressions of thanks are posted in most places where First Responders have a presence.
My personal belief is that we need a chosen day on the calender for all types of first responders. This does not need to be a holiday, but a day of recognition. Perhaps Sept. 11 would be appropriate.
My son and his wife were recently evacuated from the town of Lewiston as the Carr Fire near Redding rapidly approached their home. First they moved to Red Bluff but then had to leave as it was hot and smoky and the power kept going off. They then came to our home in San Carlos along with three cats and two dogs.
Thanks to Cal Fire and other first responders the Carr Fire just missed my son’s home in Lewiston. Other nearby neighbors were not as fortunate.

My son and his family have since moved back to Lewiston and of course another fire started not far from him in Shasta City.
Let us hope that soon there is a day of recognition on the calendar for all types of first responders, many whom have lost their lives trying to protect those around them.
