My partner and I live in North Central, near downtown, and are happy to learn that San Mateo’s City Council is moving forward with establishing a Historic Preservation Ordinance and policies to facilitate historic inventory-updating, as well as potential review of proposed demos and alterations to inventoried and designated historic buildings.
A separate commission is necessary, to help guide decision-making for the future — hopefully, with the intent to preserve the essence of our valuable past.
From my lived experiences as a local community planner, I know there are certified historic professionals who will volunteer to assist local governments.
I belong to the Unitarian Universalists of San Mateo congregation. We meet each Sunday in the oldest continually-serving place of worship in the city of San Mateo.
Constructed in 1905, our sanctuary building was identified previously by the city’s historic consultants as worthy of consideration for historic designation(s). Now is the time to follow through on that.
Future generations of San Mateans deserve to see why this city has been so very special to those who have been blessed by living here and working here.
A remembrance plaque on a newly-constructed building is just not sufficient.
