When the California Legislature reconvenes this week for a new biennial session it will have dozens of new faces and also dozens of old, unresolved issues.

Housing shortages, inflation, homelessness and drought are among the larger ones, but none is more important than the state’s crisis in public education.

Good morning, Dan

I agree with your statement, "If the Legislature did nothing else during the next two years, the session would be a success if it decisively addressed the widening “achievement gap” that separates poor and English learner students..."

Thanks for keeping this conversation going.

Unfortunately, Mr. Walters, I believe California’s answer to this gap will be to throw more money at it, even though, IMO, most of this money is being diverted as you stated, into salary increases and especially rising pension and benefits costs. I bet more money is being diverted for retired public education folks than in “the kids.” I’d recommend that newer and bolder ideas, preferably based on best practices, be submitted and acted upon. Unfortunately, with racism, xenophobia, equity, and all the other woke garbage being tossed around these days, it’s hard to see how these poor and English learner students are going to do better without newer and bolder ideas. We all know that academically, not everyone should be treated the same. Some need a little more help, and some need less help, and would benefit from advanced placement classes.

Hi, Terence

Hmmm... no mention of Gavin in Dan's op-ed piece today. Curiouser and curiouser.

Astute observation, Ray, you would think that someone on a crusade “to regularly attack Governor Newsom” as per at least one SMDJ commenter would highlight Newsom (easily, several times) in this editorial regarding education. Maybe Mr. Walter’s crusade only goes into effect every other column?
