Just minutes after Gov. Gavin Newsom unveiled a revised state budget with billions of dollars in spending reductions on Friday, advocates for affected programs began showering reporters with statements of dismay.

The gist of the complaints was that after Newsom and the Legislature had devoted attention and money to expanded health care coverage, prekindergarten education, income supports for the poor, undocumented immigrant assistance, homelessness, climate change and myriad other left-of-center causes, the new budget would punish their recipients.

I never thought that there was a difference between the California Dream Alliance and the State's legislature. Either one is superfluous in my opinion.

I'm wondering if Gavin could shelve the HSR train to nowhere and other projects to help fund programs affiliated with the Building the California Dream Alliance.

Interesting proposition, Mr. Fowler. I’d say it depends on which group provides more campaign cash to Newsom – union labor working on the train-to-nowhere or folks who are part of the Building the California Dream Alliance. Methinks, if history serves, that as long as Democrats are the party in charge in California, the train-to-nowhere will be funded well into the future even though most folks living today will never have a chance to travel from SF to LA via high speed.
