Robert Julius Tomei died at home in San Bruno May 21, 2011 surrounded by his family. Bob was born May 19, 1926 at home in Daly City, the youngest son of Julius and Estherina (Barbonchelli) Tomei of Lucca, Italy. He remained in San Mateo County all of his 85 years.
Bob is terribly missed by Jeannette, his wife of 62 years; his son Steven; his daughters Karen Winder (Phil) and Terri (Chuck Anderson); grandchildren Heather (Winder) Goyert (Jeff), Sean Winder (Melissa Erckel), Tara Winder (John Baldenegro), Cady and Ian Anderson; great-grandchildren Hunter, Dakota and Sierra Goyert and Alexis Baldenegro; and many nieces and nephews.
Raised in San Bruno, he graduated from San Mateo High School. After working as a butcher in San Francisco, he worked at Eimac (a division of Varian Industries) in San Bruno and San Carlos. Bob became foreman of the power grid tube department. He was responsible for many innovations, and received awards for inventions such as a plating rack that helped save production of one of his division’s new products. Bob worked for Eimac/Varian 40 years until his retirement.
Bob enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid sports fan. He was a devoted fan of the Cal Bears for more than 50 years through thick and thin. Bob enjoyed traveling with Jeannette and his friends to watch the Bears in games as distant as Florida.
Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle who loved his family above all else. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service 2 p.m. June 4 at St. Robert’s Catholic Church in San Bruno.
In lieu of flowers, his family appreciates donations be made to your favorite charity.
