Remember the old Bogart film, Treasure of the Sierra Madre? American prospectors are trying to extract their “goods” (sacks of gold dust) from a mine and escape the Banditos pursuing them for their valuables. When the banditos pretend to have legal authority to search and confiscate the prospectors possessions, they are presented with the Bogart character’s demand that they show their “badges” of authority. “We don’t need no stinking badges” the Bandits remark.
The Banditos ultimately succeed in overcoming the hapless prospectors but end up trashing what they saw as useless “sand.”
So all was lost except, for the Walter Houston character who had earlier left the miner’s group when he realized that all that would make him happy was the welcome he received from a small local village. Any thoughts on what we as a once respected nation may have lost in our “Bandito” performance on our southern neighbor?
